Hoea ea is on for the summer!

We are ready to work the ‘Aina  at Lihikai for 5 days  this summer.  Below is a cover page to the registration packet.  The QLCC LIABILITY WAIVER can be printed from the link, or filled out with a legal guardian on the day of the event.

Hoea ea is food sust aina-bility”. In ancient times the ahupuaa was an interdependent system of caring for each other and for the land through relationships… Hands turned to soil, this is kuleana, the responsibility of all people. Hoea ea: returning to freedom, through relationships culture, food, and of our aina. Hoea ea was born in Waianae, Oahu at Mao Farms in 2006, and continued on Hawaii Island as Hoea ea: Hands turned to soil, on Kauai as Hoea ea: Hooulu Aina in 2008, and hosted in our local communities in 2009.

Camp out, Food, Work and Work shops

This year at Hoea ea:

PIG CULTURE: Imu cooking, sausage making, kalua pig, smoke meat

COCONUT CULTURE – weaving and milk

LOKO IA - open up and work the fishponds at Lihikai

KALO watching the moon phases and sharing stories, we will harvest, plant, make poi and eat

THROW NET – learn tides, schooling, tying, and throwing net!

ZERO WASTE and GARDEN COMPOSTING systems: organic composting, worm bins, recycling systems, and cultivating indigenous micro-organisms

ALOHA FRIDAY MUSIC with SPECIAL GUESTS: “Kahumoku

(Community invited, JULY 9, @ 5:30. Donations will go to Lihikai Hawaiian Cultural Learning Center)

And as always CHOKE FOOD will be prepared!!!

PLEASE NOTE: If you are registering as a school / organization / family group, the ratio of 1:4 (one (1) responsible adult to four (4) students/children will apply. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Also, $20.00 per person, or $40.00 per ‘ohana. Scholarships will be available upon request.

What to Bring: (SEE BACK SIDE)

What to Bring

This is an experiential and cultural-learning event. Come to work and experience new skills and new friends.  Here are suggestions of what to bring:

- Please bring FOOD from your area to share with 100+ others

  • shoes that can get dirty, or tabis to wear in the loko i`a
  • sunscreen, hat, and long sleeve shirt if the sun affects you
  • swimming suit and towels, and gloves if you like to use them
  • toiletries (tooth brush, soap, shampoo) t-shirts, shorts, slippers, lava-lavas
  • sleeping gear (sleeping bag, pillow, etc)

(We’ll have large tents to sleep under, but you are welcome to bring your own)

  • If you have lauhala mats, bring them as they will help with ground cover and they are nice to sleep on
  • plastic tarp to put on the grass to help keep body and things dry
  • ceremonial wear for opening ceremony (kihei)

Ulu ka le`ale`a: This event is for us to enjoy Keaukaha, each other, and to learn new skills.  All of us will be working on specific projects throughout the four days.  We will be swimming, walking, fishing, planting, making something out of wood, pulling lots of weeds, working in brackish water, sleeping on the ground, and helping put on all meals, along with cleaning up.  Showers will be provided, along with toilets on site.
