Lihikai

E Komo Mai! Welcome to He Ola Hou Ke Kumu Niu- New Life for the Coconut Stump.

Here, we take a piece of wood and give it new life as a drum or canoe.  We are a community-based group centered around the art of carving the pahu (Hawaiian drum) and the wa`a (Hawaiian outrigger canoe).  He Ola Hou also supports and practices other Hawaiian crafts, traditions, and lifestyes.  We offer hands-on educational programs, lectures, and demonstrations to schools and community organizations.  Our site, Lihikai Hawaiian Cultural Learning Center is next to Onekahakaha Beach Park in Hilo, on the island of Hawai`i.

Our goal is to give the people of Hawai`i a place where they are inspired to achieve their potential in a family oriented environment, by promoting, teaching, and practicing Hawaiian culture in a harmonious fashion.

Our programs include:

  • Aquaculture and Service Learning Site for the Hawai`i Academy of Arts & Science Public CHarter School (2007 - Present)
  • Hoe`ea`ea Garden Project 2007-2008
  • Hawaiian studies site for Lanakila Learning Center.  Workshops include carving, lauhala weaving, hula, oli, net-making, holua sled making (2005 - Present)
  • Kalai Wa`a and Kalai Pahu.  Canoe and drum carving by Keoni Turalde (ongoing)
  • `Ulu maika carving with Ka `Umeke Ka`eo Public Charter School (2007)
